Goodman's Shoes originated as a department store on west Michigan St on the Indianapolis westside in 1913.After many years in that location, the second generation of Goodman's (Bernie Goodman) realized many people were moving north, and the shoe department was growing quickly. He with his wife Bonnie (who ran the store as Bernie went off to war) opened Goodman's Shoes in Nora Plaza in 1958. Goodman's Shoes is the only original business to still in operation at Nora Plaza.
The third generation of Goodman's(Gary) joined his parents at the age of 12 to make spending money. He continued to work, going off to college then returning to own and operate the store. Gary was joined by his wife(Patty) in 1985, and together they worked with Bonnie until she retired at the age of 90.
The Goodman's children fourth generation (Bernie and Abbe) worked at the store after school, holidays, and summers learning the business and wonderful life skills.
