About Us

Goodman's Shoes started as a department store on West Michigan St. on the Indianapolis Westside in 1913. After many years in that location, the second generation of Goodman's, Bernie Goodman, realized that many people were moving north, and the shoe department was growing quickly. So, he and his wife Bonnie opened Goodman's Shoes in Nora Plaza in 1958. They were the only original business at this shopping center for 35 years until February 2023 when they were forced to move to their brand-new location right around the corner at Nora Corners shopping center (1530 E. 86th St.).

The third generation of Goodman's, Gary, joined his parents at 12 to make some spending money. He continued to work, went to college, and then returned to own and operate the store. Gary was joined by his wife Patty in 1985, and together they worked with Bonnie until she retired at the age of 90. The Goodman's children, fourth-generation Bernie and Abbe, also worked at the store after school, holidays, and summers, learning business and valuable life skills.
